Union
leader in Taxation uses contract to stop outsourcing, get
overtime pay
July
19, 2001 - Thanks
to Chandra Greever, Chief Steward, Executive Board member for
Chapter 2595, and Taxation Assembly Vice President, there is one
less state contractor trying to privatize state services.
As
a result of Greever's quick reaction and perseverance,
management in the Department of Taxation will no longer be
promoting the use of or hiring part-time employees through the
private contractor Flex Tech.
It
seems Administrators in Taxation were attempting to put an end
to having to pay Saturday overtime for bargaining unit members
by asking them to moonlight through the contractor for the
department at the rate of $7.50 an hour. Greever quickly filed a
grievance on the matter.
Not
only did Greever put an end to the practice of soliciting
members to do contract work, but she got overtime pay for
bargaining unit members who had enjoyed working those extra
hours in the past as well as for those employees who had never
been given the opportunity to work overtime. She also made sure
that other Flex Tech part-time contract laborers who were
working the day shift along side bargaining unit members, were
given their walking papers. Good work!
